PCB Pin Badges – HW Blinky

In the lead up to Hayley Williams’s UK tour I got inspired seeing people making bracelets and trinkets to share with each other. So of course I had to get involved and put my own spin on things.

Sticking with the two-letter theme from the Blinky 65 badge, I started with Hayley’s lo-fi “HW” logo and converted it into something a little less crunchy. Blue and yellow are big parts of the branding of the “Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party” album so I went with a blue silkscreen and yellow LEDs.

Other than the changes to the front side of the PCB, I tweaked the LED footprint on the rear to make the cutout slightly bigger. This should make positioning and soldering the LEDs a bit easier.

As PCBWay no longer offer PayPal as a payment method, this project marks the first time I’ve used JLCPCB. As a new customer it cost a little under $5 for 30 PCBs. The PCBs were shipped 3 days after ordering and arrived with me 5 days after shipping. I’m very impressed with the quality and they seem to offer the same range of options as PCBWay.

The assembled badges turned out great! This time around I decided to make both “blinky” badges and “static” badges. If I make any more badges (I’ve got plans) I might shuffle the resistor positions slightly to allow for better alignment of the LEDs with respect to the logo.

Getting to the gig at the Roundhouse turned out to be a bit of a disaster, so I didn’t manage to give away as many badges as I would have liked. I’ve added the remainder to my Tindie store if you’d like to pick one up.

If Hayley comes back to the UK I’ll be sure to bring some more.
